A Thousand Lives: How many books can I buy in a week?

Don't you just love charity shops? If I only bought brand new books, I would only had about 10 instead of 300... It astounds me when I find a really good book in a charity shop, I can't help but think "why would you give this book away?!" But I am also eternally grateful to these people who give away amazing books, because they give me a chance to buy them at an *affordable price.
So here are the books that I have bought this week:

  • Oscar Wilde Plays: Prose, Writings and Poems by Oscar Wilde
  • Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
  • Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by R L Stevenson
  • Sons and Lovers by D H Lawrence
  • Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
  • The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
  • The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
  • The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas
  • One Day by David Nicholls
I am very excited to start The Count of Monte Cristo as after watching the film - which I loved - I found out that the original story is very different, and I am curious to see if I will like it as much as the film.
The pretty cover of Around the World in Eighty Days drew me into buying the book despite the fact that I already own a copy. I just can't resist pretty covers! This was the case with The Portrait of a Lady, which I don't actually know the plot of but I remember hearing about.
Wilde and Hardy's books were actually a birthday present from a friend, and I am curious to read them as I have heard a lot about the stories!

Have you bought any new books recently? Do you ever buy books just because of their pretty covers?

*I don't mean to say that books are overpriced, just that as a student with no job, I can't afford to buy them as regularly as I would like.
